The Phi Kappa Mu International Inc. is a California 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation, a non-profit organization run by volunteers, with no paid employees, and no operational expenses.
Phi International was conceived in the mid 1990’s by a ragtag group of dedicated UP College of Medicine alumni in the United States who regularly attended the University of the Philippines Medical Alumni Association of America (UPMASA) Annual Grand Conventions. The Phi Brothers began to meet to formalize the creation of an organization in the USA. The Constitution and Bylaws of the Phi Kappa Mu International was drafted by Dr. Tony Donesa. On July 7, 2002, in Buffalo, New York, the PKMI Constitution and Bylaws were adopted and approved, and Phi Kappa Mu International was born.
It was officially incorporated in the State of California on December 11 2002, under the stewardship of Drs. Arnel Joaquin and Romy Isidro. The Internal Revenue Service application followed and on October 17, 2003, Phi Kappa Mu International, Incorporated officially became a California 501(c)(3) tax-exempt corporation.
Dr. Jimmy del Pilar, its first president laid the foundations for the organization and created programs to benefit its members and the alma mater. The succeeding presidents, Dr. Jess Socrates, Dr. Romy Isidro, Dr. Bill Romero, Dr. Billy Cabellon, Dr. Jerry Ciocon, Dr. Iman Lat, and Dr. Jun Nibungco built on these foundations and strengthened these programs to benefit Filipinos outside of the UP College of Medicine and the Philippine General Hospital. The current president Dr. Joey Dimen has plans to help provide ophthalmological care to indigent pediatric patients at the Philippine General Hospital and also to set up thyroid screening in the communities aimed at treating preventable thyroid conditions.
